There is no other sailing event that makes visiting sailors and St. Maarten locals more excited than the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. Why? It’s simple really:
Concerts with international artists; Check.
Flowing Heineken beer; Check.
Beautiful sail boats racing around the island; Check.
Every first weekend of March, St. Maarten’s population all but doubles when the island receives an influx of professional sailors, sailing aficionados, spectators and those who simply come down for some Serious Fun in the sun.
Like I said in my last post, I am not a huge fan of carnival. I guess all that excessive partying is no longer my thing, which is why I usually try to find great travel deals around this time of year to get off the island, and get as far away as possible from all the mayhem. I must admit though that I shockingly found myself enjoying this year’s Dutch St. Maarten Carnival. I was dragged by friends out of my bed at four in the morning to take part in this year’s jouvert, a parade that starts at dawn and ends sometime around midday and leaves a trail of drunks in its wake. I found myself in the village on at least one occasion enjoying the different food and drink booths and I surprised myself by attending the grand parade, an event so colorful I am still smiling days later.
I say Carnival and you think feathers and bikinis, right? WRONG! Welcome to St. Maarten’s carnival, where the feathers and bikinis take backstage to the music, parties and the food. Oh. My. Goodness. The food!

Hot as balls.
That’s what it was. Hot as balls.
I mean… I don’t have balls nor do I really know how hot they can be, but just a few days in, it became clear. Las Vegas in the Summer is hot as balls… Or the devil’s toenails, whichever island saying you like the most.
As I sit down to write this blog post I am full of excitement. I mean, I am super psyched, my stomach is making somersaults. You know that feeling when you’re totally “GaGa” for someone? You can’t eat, you can’t sleep. Butterflies have taken up what seems like permanent residence in your stomach? That’s how I feel about the next White Sensation party. Why? Just because of three little words:
FEDDE. LE. GRAND.
