Street art at it’s Caribbean finest. That’s what I call the murals found in Santa Bárbara, a tiny neighborhood at the edge of the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo. Not the finest of neighborhoods but a treat for street art fans nonetheless.
Santa Bárbara sits right on the edge of La Zona Colonial, close to the port of Santo Domingo and only steps away from all the beautiful historic buildings, nice restaurants, souvenir stores and other tourist traps. I was shocked to see such a drastic contrast. We were definitely not in Kansas anymore, Toto.
Prepared with my GoPro, camera and iPhone in hand, I pulled my shoulders back and made the brave journey into this somewhat unsavory part of town, alone.
It may not have been the nicest of neighborhoods to walk though, nor was it the safest but it was well worth a visit. Now in decay, Santa Bárbara still shows obvious signs of its rich history. It is no wonder that a group of artists chose this neighborhood as the place to exhibit their art and in so doing force those who chose to ignore the neighborhood for so long to finally open their eyes and face the harsh reality that is now Sánta Barbara.
